Duval Precision Grinding recently had the opportunity to collaborate with a new customer in the electronic component manufacturing sector, specifically within semiconductor manufacturing. The customer contacted Duval Precision Grinding after experiencing challenges with sending their parts to two separate vendors for different operations. Seeking a one-stop shop for both internal diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) grinding, they approached Duval with the goal of simplifying their process.

The prints called for multiple dimensions to be lapped, but thanks to Duval’s advanced grinding capabilities, they were able to achieve the customer’s requested 4-8 micro surface finish through precision grinding alone. This efficiency not only met the customer’s specifications but also exceeded their expectations by eliminating the need for additional processing steps.

Overcoming Challenges with Grinding Expertise

One of the key challenges in this project was qualifying the fixture to the parts to ensure high-quality production. Duval’s team meticulously calibrated the fixture to meet the tight tolerances required, ensuring each part was ground to the highest standards.

Additionally, due to the thin walls of the parts, temperature fluctuations during production had a noticeable effect on the dimensions. Duval’s engineers monitored and adjusted the process to mitigate these temperature-related variations, ensuring that each part met the specifications despite the environmental sensitivity.

The customer, facing a tight deadline to maintain good standing with their own customers, requested expedited services. Duval rose to the occasion, completing the project—including both engineering and grinding operations—within one week. To guarantee full transparency and quality, Duval supplied the customer with Certificates of Conformance (C of C) and detailed inspection reports, reinforcing their commitment to excellence.
